Amman, Jan. 9 (Petra)-- Jordan has been affected since Friday morning by a depression accompanied by a cold and moist air mass, causing a sharp and noticeable drop in temperatures, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD).
Weather conditions are cold, cloudy, and rainy across the northern and central regions, with rainfall gradually extending to most parts of the Kingdom.
Heavy rain is expected in the north, central areas, and southwestern regions, including the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea area. Thunderstorms and hail may accompany the rainfall at times, increasing the risk of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, as well as rising water levels.
The JMD has warned of the danger of flash floods in these areas, urging citizens to stay away from wadis and avoid attempting to cross areas where rainwater has accumulated.
It noted that rainfall intensity will gradually weaken during nighttime hours, with a slight chance late at night and for a short period of light, intermittent snowfall mixed with rain over the high peaks of the Sharah Mountains. Fog formation is also expected in many areas, particularly over mountainous regions.
The department further cautioned against reduced horizontal visibility due to fog, low clouds touching the ground, heavy rainfall, and strong winds with gusts that may reach speeds of 50–60 km/h. Reduced visibility is also possible in desert areas due to dust.
Additional warnings were issued about slippery roads in areas experiencing rainfall.
Citizens were advised to use heating appliances safely and secure loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds.
On Saturday, weather conditions are expected to remain cold and partly cloudy, with a continued chance of intermittent rain showers in western parts of the Kingdom. By evening, the likelihood of rainfall will decrease, and weather conditions will gradually stabilize. Winds will be moderate westerlies, becoming occasionally active, especially in desert areas.
Temperatures in that capital Amman will range between a high of 9 degrees Celsius, and a low of 3 degrees.
Highs in the port city of Aqaba will reach 17 degrees, sliding to 9 degrees at night.
